Regardless of whether a breast is very large or simply empty: breast tissue can sag and thus severely disrupt the body image. Sagging breasts can be corrected and, if necessary, reduced in size using modern plastic surgery procedures.

The larger a woman's breasts become during puberty, the greater the risk that the tissue will sag later on. However, sagging breasts can also have other causes, such as weight loss, pregnancy and, of course, a genetic predisposition. This means that the connective tissue is somewhat weak and cannot support the weight of the breast in the long term. The consequences are very stressful for women: the breast hangs down, the nipple moves downwards and it is not uncommon for the lower part of the breast to lie completely against the body. Sweating, skin rashes and inflammation often occur in this area.

Both small and large breasts can sag. Breast sagging therefore has nothing to do with volume, even if larger breasts naturally tend to move downwards in line with gravity over the course of life.

As a general rule, there is an optimal surgical technique for every breast. It is important that the treating specialist has the full range of surgical techniques at their disposal and is proficient in them in order to minimise scarring and optimise the result. Both breast lift and breast reduction require a great deal of experience and sound training. Below we present the various techniques that we use successfully in most breast lift procedures.

For further information, please see the bottom of the page. This is where the advantages and disadvantages of the procedures are presented and the risks and side effects are explained. However, this cannot replace a personal consultation (also via video), in which these aspects are explained and adapted individually. We therefore look forward to a personal consultation with you!

Who is it for?

A breast lift is suitable for any patient who suffers from sagging breasts. Of course, the technique must be discussed and selected individually in order to minimise scarring if a breast lift is not possible without any scarring at all. Much also depends on the aftercare and professional scar care, which we see as part of our job at the clinic. As the operation is mainly performed on the surface of the body (skin, fatty tissue, glands) and deeper layers such as the muscles are not touched at all, the operation is relatively painless and in many cases only involves an overnight stay at our clinic.

Details

Mastopexy, or breast lift, can be used to restore the lost firmness and beauty of the breast. The sagging breast tissue is lifted by reshaping the glandular body and the skin mantle is tightened by removing excess skin. Nipples that are too low in relative terms are moved to a higher position and reduced in size if necessary. Asymmetries between the left and right breast can be equalised. The volume of the breast can be maintained during the breast lift, for example by forming a so-called inner bra from the body's own tissue. However, the size of the breast can also be changed at the same time as the lift if desired. The breast is reduced in size by removing parts of the glandular body, and breast augmentation is achieved by inserting autologous fat and/or a breast implant. Breast lifting using autologous fat and implants is called breast multi-sculpturing. In order to successfully lift my breast, it is necessary to move tissue and adapt the skin mantle to the new shape. Like a tailor taking away a hand, this results in stitches, i.e. scars later on. In principle, it is not possible to completely avoid scars with any breast lift technique. As a patient, you will have to make a compromise if you want a breast lift. In any case, a breast lift will result in a scar around the nipple itself and possibly also a scar that runs vertically downwards into the underbust crease (I incision) or a horizontal scar in the underbust crease (T incision). Of course, we always try to choose the technique that results in the least scarring during a breast lift. However, it must be said that the smaller techniques seldom allow for optimal shaping of the breast. Sometimes "more technique means more result". We need to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques with you, show you pictures and examples of procedures that have been performed by us.

After Treatment

The operation takes around 2.5 to 4 hours and is performed under a short anaesthetic. After the operation, you will be given a single room in our private clinic and can spend the afternoon and the following night recovering with us. You will, of course, receive comprehensive care from our excellent nursing team. Drains are always placed to drain the wound fluid from the wound cavity. These drains are removed the next morning, the dressing is removed and replaced with a special bra, which the patient must wear day and night for around six weeks after the operation. The wounds are covered with plasters and usually heal without any problems in the first 2-3 weeks under the plasters. The stitches are self-dissolving. The aftercare intervals are one week, three weeks, six weeks, twelve weeks, six months and twelve months. At each appointment, we will give you tips and tricks on how to optimise the result. Of course, you will receive a prescription for painkillers and, if necessary, an antibiotic as well as the necessary products for scar care. As you can see, our care does not end with the operation, but only when you are completely satisfied with the result.

Results & risks

As with many aesthetic procedures, breast lift surgery requires a little patience, as the breast is initially very swollen and deformed, often of different sizes and very taut. The final result only gradually appears in the weeks following the operation. You will need to be patient for a total of three months before you can see a good result. If the scars do not heal optimally or are very noticeable, subsequent scar corrections can help to improve the appearance and increase your satisfaction.
