Andropause - Male menopause

Andropause

Menopause is no longer just a topic for women. Men also undergo hormonal changes from middle age onwards that can have a profound impact on their body, mind, and quality of life. This so-called andropause or late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) describes the age-related decline in the male sex hormone testosterone and affects an estimated up to 30% of men over the age of 50 (Tajar et al., 2012; EMAS study).

Male menopause – the often overlooked phase of life

What happens during andropause?

Unlike female menopause, which begins abruptly with the cessation of menstruation, hormonal changes in men occur gradually. From the age of 35, testosterone levels drop by about 1% each year, with free testosterone falling even more sharply (Matsumoto, 2002). Since testosterone influences many functions in the male body—such as muscle mass, bone strength, sexual function, mood, and energy balance—a deficiency can lead to a variety of complaints.

Many men report symptoms during this stage of life that they often do not directly associate with hormones. The most common symptoms include:

  • Loss of libido and declining erectile function

  • Lack of energy and motivation, fatigue

  • Muscle loss, weight gain (especially around the abdomen)

  • Irritability, depressive moods or feelings of anxiety

  • Sleep disorders

  • Poor concentration and memory problems

  • Declining performance in everyday life and at work

A large European study (EMAS) showed that approximately 2.1% of men over the age of 40 have a pronounced testosterone deficiency with corresponding symptoms. However, the number of unreported cases is likely to be significantly higher, as many men seek medical help late or not at all.

A problem that should not be underestimated is the psychological stress caused by the feeling of ‘aging’ or “no longer being able to perform.” Many men feel ashamed to talk about sexual problems or emotional exhaustion. As a result, symptoms remain untreated even though effective help is available.

What can be done?

At the Rosengarten Clinic, we have been dedicated to male intimate surgery for many years. The most common procedures include penis enlargement, tightening and enlargement of the scrotum, and special procedures that are only offered by us, such as Ejanova(R) or Phallograft(R) surgery.

However, in recent years, we have found that many men also come to our clinic for advice on issues related to andropause. We have developed a multi-stage treatment concept to help men get through the male menopause with minimal symptoms and maximum performance.

Androgen hormone analysis

At the beginning of treatment, it is often useful to measure a patient's current hormone status using scientifically proven methods. For this purpose, several values can be obtained from a blood sample to determine the current phase of a man's hormone production. It should be noted that countless diseases can also cause changes in a man's hormone levels and trigger symptoms that may not be related to the disease at all. Many of these diseases are age-independent, meaning they can also affect younger men.

Once we have compiled the laboratory results, we can focus on the question of which treatment options we can offer him.

Treatment of male andropause

At the Rosengarten Clinic, we now offer a wide range of treatments to alleviate or slow down the effects of andropause and even “get rid” of certain symptoms. The most common treatments include:

  • Medication to support hormone production (e.g., testosterone)

  • Infusion treatments with special precursor stages of male sex hormones

  • Stem cell treatment of the erectile tissue blood flow through P-Shot and P-Shot pro

  • Medication to support blood flow to the erectile tissue

  • Modification of the small arteries in the penis (known as Penitox(R) treatment)

For further information, please see the bottom of the page. This is where the advantages and disadvantages of the procedures are presented and the risks and side effects are explained. However, this cannot replace a personal consultation (also via video), in which these aspects are explained and adapted individually. We therefore look forward to a personal consultation with you!

Who is it for?

We treat men of all ages, as the symptoms are the main focus and are not always linked to middle age. Treatment with andere Pause is particularly beneficial for men who suffer from any of the following symptoms:

  1. Decreased erectile function

  2. Loss of erection during sexual intercourse

  3. Decreased physical performance

  4. Recurring fatigue and mental instability

  5. Lack of motivation

  6. Decreased sexual desire

  7. Hair loss and changes in connective tissue

Details

Based on your symptoms and the intensity of your discomfort, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan, which can often extend over a period of twelve weeks. The first step is diagnosis and the collection of certain laboratory values. Based on these values, treatments are then determined, which are carried out in the following weeks to improve the overall situation.

Inpatient stays or general anesthesia are not necessary for any of the treatments, unless you are also interested in additional services such as penis lengthening or penis thickening. These may be useful in conjunction with andropause therapy. We would be happy to discuss these options with you as well.

After treatment

After each treatment, you can immediately resume your normal daily activities and basically have no downtime. Treatments last several hours, and abstinence from sports and sexual activity is necessary for a few hours. However, there is no significant downtime.
