Hylase (dissolving hyaluronic acid)

A major advantage of synthetically produced hyaluronic acid is that it can be dissolved again by injecting a special enzyme. The medication required for this is also known as hylase.

Dissolving hyaluronic acid (hylase treatment)

If too much hyaluronic acid has been injected in certain areas and the resulting effects are too intense or completely undesirable, a special injection can be used to remedy the situation. The synthetically produced hyaluronic acid is dissolved by an enzyme that can break down the individual chains of hyaluronic acid. If this is injected into the identical, i.e. previously treated areas, the effect of the hyaluronic acid can be reversed. A common example is patients who come to us after having their lips treated (lip augmentation) in another practice because the volume is too large and the effect is perceived as too unnatural. A simple injection can help here: We inject a special medication into the lips that dissolves the volume.

For further information, please see the bottom of the page. This is where the advantages and disadvantages of the procedures are presented and the risks and side effects are explained. However, this cannot replace a personal consultation (also via video), in which these aspects are explained and adapted individually. We therefore look forward to a personal consultation with you!

Who is it for?

Treatment with Hylase is suitable for all patients who have received an "overcorrection" as a result of hyaluronic acid injections, i.e. who complain of "too much" volume in a facial region and would like to reduce this again. A correction with Hylase can also be useful to normalize the result after lip augmentation, which should appear natural, or if the result is not desired.

Details

Dissolving the hyaluronic acid essentially works in the same way as the original injection itself. The medication is injected with a syringe and a thin cannula into the areas where too much hyaluronic acid has been placed. The effect sets in within a few hours and the volume decreases. After just a few days, a depot of previously injected hyaluronic acid can be reduced to zero, so to speak. This restores the previous state and the correct amount of material can be injected again if required.

After treatment

No special follow-up treatment is required after the injection of Hylase. In some cases, a light massage of the soft tissue is required to distribute the medication well. Very rarely, bruises (hematomas) may occur, which subside after a few days and can be easily covered with make-up by then.

Results & risks

The results of a Hylase injection are visible within a few hours to days and the troublesome hyaluronic acid deposits can be effectively and easily removed or reduced. Side effects occasionally include slight swelling or the formation of bruising, but overall Hylase injections are a simple and uncomplicated treatment.

Costs

The cost of a Hylase treatment starts at around €150 and depends on the amount of hylauronic acid that needs to be broken down or reduced.
